New on DVD (May 20th, 2013)

New On DVD

Busy release week with 7 new releases to discuss, my overall feeling is that there may be many but very few seem appealing.

First up we have

Side Effects

Side Effects

Jude Law, Rooney Marra, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Channing Tatum star in this provocative thriller that was oft talked about at its’ release.  The film recieved some good reviews and I am looking forward to checking it out.

next up we have

Beautiful Creatures

Beautiful Creatures

I guess this is a supernatural love story, I have heard very little about it.  Any thoughts from our readers would be appreciated.

then we have

Parker

Parker

J-Lo and J-Strat star in this mystery/suspense movie based on a book series of the same name.  Do I smell a bunch of sub-par movies based on sub-par books, I think I do?

next up is

The Last Stand

The Last Stand

This action movie stars the former Governor of California and Forest Whitaker.  Since he left office Arnold has made some sub par films and I imagine this is more of the same.

then we have

Stand Up Guys

Stand Up Guys

You would figure a movie with Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin, and Julianna Margulies would have to be good, right?  Well from what I have read you and I are dead wrong.  I will see this because I love Walken and Arkin and when I do I will let you know what I think.

next up we have

The ABC’s of Death

The ABCs of Death

Not feeling this film at all, anthology with 26 directors and 26 ways to die.  Each director takes on a chapter and what?  Maybe I will see this but I could use some input from our readers.

and finally we have

Struck by Lightning

Struck by Lightning

Starring Dermot Mulroney and Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Drive) this film looks far from appealing.  High school star dies from, you guessed it, struck by lightning and we get to live his last few weeks before the incident.  If that sounds interesting then you are in luck, I will pass on this one.

That’s it that’s all

I remember someone reviewing abc and it wasn’t a good review. I like gory movies but the idea to watch 26 ways to die seems too much.

The Last Stand, I would love to see that, many had said it was good.

Of the two you mentioned I would probably watch The Last Stand.

Looks like a tough group of movie. Hard to believe that Stand Up Guys may suck but as you said, if Walken and Arkin are in it it’s worth giving it a shot. Looks like some future Bin movies here.

I feel the same way I did about 7 Psychopaths, which I enjoyed, so maybe it will surprise.

Beautiful Creatures, Parker, The Last Stand, Stand Up Guys are okay. Side Effects I haven’t seen, but maybe will. The others I wouldn’t bother. Just my opinion, of course.

I want to see Side Effects, just because people siad it was a mind bender.

Did Stand Up Guys even get a cinema release? I don’t think it did over here in the UK. Shame, I was looking forward to that! Wouldn’t mind taking a look at all of these except the lightning one and Beautiful Creatures.

Side Effects is pretty decent although not my favorite Soderbergh film. It has his trademark slick visual style and creepy music. The disappointing part is that it starts out as a fascinating exploration of the pharmaceutical industry raising some great ethical questions, but devolves into a very typical lusty thriller.

Beautiful Creatures is all right. Cheesy teen romance in the vein of Twilight, except it has kind of a cheeky sense of humor and features a young woman in the strong/supernatural character archetype. The best of this movie is Jeremy Irons chewing scenery as an eccentric uncle.

I love Arnold, even in some of his subpar films, however I thought he would make a terrible small-town sheriff. He actually surprised the heck out of me though with The Last Stand. One of the things that I dig is that Arnold still kicks plenty of ass, without pretending he’s still a young man. There are plenty of spots where he acknowledges he’s past his prime and reigns in his performance/stunts accordingly. It’s a fun movie where you can check your brain at the door. Definitely worth checking out.

I’ve also heard not so great things about Stand Up Guys, yet I still want to watch it because I think all of those actors are awesome, especially Christopher Walken. He’s a blast even in silly movies like Poolhall Junkies.

I will watch anything with Walken and you may have convinced me to see The Last Stand

I’m glad to hear that. I remember The Last Stand bombed so hard at the box office, but I didn’t feel that was deserved, because of the other crap that was in theaters at the time.
