New on DVD

Hey all, Scotty is busy this week so I am filling in.

This week we have a veritable cornucopia of straight to DVD releases to look at.

First up is All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. Apparently all the boys didn’t love this movie because it has a 41% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I have seen this one lurking around on itunes for a while now and as much as I enjoy watching some Amber Heard for a couple of hours, I just couldn’t bring myself to watching this.

Next up is Drinking Buddies with Olivia Wilde and Jake Johnson. This one did manage to drag me on on itunes and I gave it a watch a few months ago. I thought it was ok but nothing special. Sean Daly, one of regular writers, also checked this one out and wrote up a full review you can check out here: http://3guys1movie.com/drinking-buddies/

Who can forget the oscar bait that was The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones? Needless to say I did what everyone else did and avoided seeing this dud. It currently enjoys a 12% fresh rating.

Finally the biggie of the week has to be The Wolverine. I just saw this recently and although it wasn’t a horrible movie, I can’t say that it impressed me a whole lot either. Very middle of the road with some nice set pieces and attractive young ladies but lacking substance and the story is pretty weak sauce.

I did want to give a shout out to a couple of old movies that are getting the blu-ray treatment this week. First is Nashville by John Altman (MASH). If you have never seen it I highly recommend checking this film out. It used a ground breaking style at the time. He created special sound recording system so that he could have the actors dialogue overlap instead of one actor talking at a time.

Also, Saturn 3 is getting the blu-ray treatment this week. This movie stunk on ice but my parents dragged my brother and I to see it when we were both about 8 or 9 years old and it still haunts my memories. It does have a very young Farrah Fawcett and and a not so young Kirk Douglas in it. Harvey Keitel makes an appearance as well but none of that saves this film from being terrible.

Well that’s it for this week, happy viewing!

I can’t imagine Wolverine not breaking records. It’s the one to beat this week.

I haven’t seen the rest, but I actually liked The Wolverine. Much better than X Men Origins (which I thought was a total turd) and I think it did a great job of making a normally invincible character vulnerable for once. The story was definitely lacking in places as was the ending, although I had fun overall.

I just wish I could have been there for the pitch…

Pitch Guy: so then we get about 50 ninjas…
      Exec: Yeah
Pitch Guy: and we put chick in a snow blower and she starts chopping up ninjas
      Exec: Brilliant!
