With this years’ release of the much-anticipated Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Jessica Alba may be on the lips of us movie goers more than she already is. Clearly she has something; she is one of the most “searched” women on the internet and was once FHM’s Sexiest Woman of the Year in 2007, but it is 2013. Now I am not a huge Jessica Alba fan and honestly I had forgotten about her until I started reading up on the sequel to Sin City and the sequel to Machete, Machete Kills both due out this year. This could be and should be a huge year for Alba and anticipating this I took a look back at her career.
At the ripe old age of 14 Jessica Alba had a bit part in the family/comedy Camp Nowhere (1994) starring Christopher Lloyd. She landed a bigger role in the science fiction movie Venus Rising (1995) as Young Eve. These are 2 films I have never seen so I cannot comment on her acting or ability. For the next 4 years Alba starred in or appeared in several television series’ and yes, afterschool specials. Amongst those are Chicago Hope, Brooklyn South, Beverly Hills 90210, The Love Boat: The Next Wave and Flipper. She returned to the movies in 2003 in a film about a dance choreographer called Honey which was well received by teenagers but no one else.
Her next film would change the direction of her career and her popularity when she starred in Sin City (2005) as Nancy Callahan, an exotic dancer with a past, highlighted in the film. For me this was really the first taste of Jessica Alba I had and I was not the only one in the theater with my eyes popping out of my head. She played the part perfectly and perfectly looked the part.
Also in 2005 she starred in Fantastic Four as Sue Storm, now I was far from a fan of this film but Alba held her own and was a good fit in her Fantastic Four superhero costume. Even though the film was “not great” by any stretch comic book boys worldwide were pinning her up on their lockers and bedroom walls. Alba was shedding her teen image and becoming regarded as one of the Sexiest Women in the world. Later in 2005 she starred in yet another role in the film Into the Blue. This film was less than well received but Alba was in a swimsuit and that is all that mattered to some.
After a 2 year hiatus Alba had a small part in the film The Ten (2007), co-starring Paul Rudd and Winona Ryder. I have not seen this one but from all reports, not very good. Later in 2007 came the 2nd film in the Fantastic Four Series; Rise of the Silver Surfer. Once again she looked the part but the film was far from well received.
Between 2007 and 2011 Alba starred in 11 more films, highlighted in my opinion by Machete, I highlight that one because out of the 11 that is the only one I have seen. There was Good Luck Chuck 2007, Meet Bill 2007, Awake 2007, The Eye 2008, The Love Guru 2008, The Killer Inside Me 2010, which 3guy cohort Adam Griffith did a review on which you can read @ http://3guys1movie.com/the-killer-inside-me-2010/ . Valentine’s Day 2010, Machete 2010, An Invisible Sign 2010, Little Fockers 2010, and Spy Kids: All the time in the World 4D end a very busy decade.
Jessica Alba has 42 titles in her filmography and most of them score very lowly on all of the meters that measure fan and critic reviews save Sin City, but that has not stopped her phone from ringing. Is she all looks and no substance, will this be the year she actually does something worthy of critical acclaim or will she continue to take roles that focus your attention away from her acting and place it on, well you know? I am sure she is sick of lifting chins up and saying, “Hey, my eyes are up here.”
