First Look at Gosling and Refn’s Only God Forgives

Frequent readers will be familiar with our love of the 2011 film Drive.  So it’s no surprise that we are eagerly looking forward to the soon to completed next collaboration between director Refn and actor Gosling.  The film Only God Forgives is currently in post production in Thailand.  Rumor has it that the film may get an initial U.S. showing at the upcoming Venice Film Festival.

The film is set in Bangkok where Julian (Gosling) and his family run a Thai boxing club that is actually a front for their drug running business.  Julian’s brother Billy (Tom Burke) is killed by The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer.  Julian’s mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) demands retribution and Julian sets out to avenge his brothers death.  Fans of Refn realize that the film is going to beautiful and brutal.  However, if your not sure about the level of violence in the film just take a gander at the Gosling’s face in the poster above.

Recently a very brief teaser clip trailer has been making it’s way around the interwebs.

While this is only a brief snap shot of a trailer it still has me intrigued an eager to find out more about the upcoming film.  It should be fun to watch Gosling showing off his Muay Thai skills on the big screen.

If you really want to find out some more about the film and Refn’s process you can also check out this brief interview about the making of the film.  It’s interesting to note that Refn states he had to shoot some scenes out of sequence due to the cost of the lighting for nighttime shoots in Chinatown.  In the past Refn has always shot his films in chronological order and without any rehearsals.

Loved Drive, so totally looking forward to this one!

I actually didn’t know that Refn filmed chronologically. That’s pretty interesting, you never hear about directors doing that. Thanks for posting this. :)

Scott I saw that you can stream his Pusher trilogy on Amazon instant. Similarly, Bronson and Valhalla Rising, are available on Netflix if you have not checked those out yet.

Stoked for this. Valhalla Rising and Drive are bad ass. I still need to see Bronson, though.

His wall of cards is insane. That is definitely not how I would do it, but I would suck anyways, so there you have it.

Pretty wild set up he has going on with his note cards. I wonder if that has something to do with his dyslexia. I also read he was color blind.

      • Sir Phobos January 25, 2013, 3:10 am

Uh, well, if he’s bogth dyslexic and color blind, that actually bodes well for me. Not that I’ll do anything about it.

Sir Phobos, I also heard he suffers from Mild Hulkism, Monkey Lung and Involuntary Narnia Adventures….

Involuntary Narnia Adventures sounds like the worst of that batch of illnesses.

    Looks amazing!

Oh, this sounds like found. I personally love Muay Thai, so any chance on watching it on the big screen, I’m all about it.

I haven’t seen “Drive” yet. I know, I know….you don’t need to tell me how terrible that is. I get that “looks” all the time from my friends. I’ll get on it, promise.

Damn, why is it that Ryan still looks good looking, even with a blood face? It’s just not fair, I tell ya! NOT FAIR. :)
